Difference between Compatible and Genuine Cartridges

When you look for printing cartridges, you’ll notice that there are a number of options available to you in the market. The cartridge types include OEM or original equipment manufacturer cartridge, genuine cartridge, compatible cartridge, refilled cartridge, and remanufactured cartridge.

What is the difference between compatible and genuine?

Many customers are torn between compatible and genuine cartridges and don’t know which one to choose. Here are some facts that can make the decision easier:

  • Manufacturer – Compatible cartridges are manufactured by third-party companies by replicating the design and construction of original cartridges. Genuine cartridges are manufactured by the original manufacturers that designed and built the printer.

  • Cost – Compatible cartridges are more affordable because the manufacturers don’t have to bear the overhead expenses that come with research, design, and development. Genuine cartridges are more expensive because the original manufacturers have higher standards for production as well as higher overhead expenses.

  • Quality – You can always rely on the quality of genuine cartridges and know they will perform well. However, that doesn’t mean that compatible cartridges are bad. If you choose a reliable manufacturer, look at the reviews and ratings carefully, and purchase something with a good reputation, you should get similar performance.

  • Warranty – Compatible cartridges will not violate warranties of the printer, but it’s still a good idea to use a genuine cartridge for the first 12 months of use. That way, you don’t risk voiding the warranty.

  • Quality of prints – There’s no difference in the quality of text print whether you use compatible cartridges or genuine cartridges. However, you’ll experience difference in quality when it comes to photograph prints. These prints will always be more vivid with original cartridges and original photograph printing paper.

  • Use – If you intend to print text frequently and will use the printer on a regular basis, you should consider compatible cartridges. However, if you intend to use your printer rarely, it’s a good idea to stick with genuine cartridges.
