How to Install Ink and Toner Cartridges in Canon Printers

Canon ink and toner cartridges are some of the most popular types of cartridges that you can buy. They’re known for their high quality and are used all over the world.

Toner cartridge installation 

  1. Switch off the printer.
  2. Pull out the tray and the front handle. 
  3. Hold onto the toner cartridge you want to replace and pull it straight up. 
  4. Take the new cartridge out of the box and remove protective packaging carefully. 
  5. Hold both sides of the cartridge and shake gently around 5-6 times to evenly distribute the toner. Don’t remove the drum protective cover when shaking. 
  6. Put the cartridge onto a flat surface.
  7. Remove the sealing tape by first grabbing the tab and taking it out. Then pull the sealing tape straight out. 
  8. Take off the drum protective cover. 
  9. Hold the cartridge securely by the handle and install it by placing it into the printer (the positions to install the toner cartridge depend on the toner colour, place the cartridge in the slot with the label of the same colour). 
  10. Close the tray.
  11. Close the front cover and your printer should be ready for use. 

Ink cartridge installation  

  1. Turn off the printer.
  2. Open the cover.
  3. Remove any paper in the printer.
  4. Open the paper output cover. 
  5. The cartridge holder will change to the replacement position but don’t touch it till it has stopped. 
  6. Push down gently on the cartridge till it clicks and remove it.
  7. Place the new cartridge into the holder at a slanted angle. The colour cartridge is on the left, and the black cartridge is on the right (you will also see this on the key). 
  8. Push the cartridges in and up to snap it into place. 
  9. Ensure both cartridges are lined up evenly.
  10. Close the cover, turn on the printer, and it should be ready for use once it aligns itself.

Things to remember when handling ink cartridges 

There are a few things you should keep in mind when opening up your printer to replace or reseat your ink cartridge:

  • Avoid touching the cartridge’s electrical contact or print head nozzles otherwise the printer may not work properly
  • The inside of the printer may have ink stains so be careful not to stain your surfaces, clothing, or hands. You can clean off any ink inside the printer with a clean, dry cloth. 
  • Avoid touching any metallic parts or other areas inside the printer.
