Your printing patterns are a factor
Manufacturers will give an estimated number of pages that they expect their cartridges to print, but those figures will depend on how you use your printer more than anything. For example, smaller printing jobs at irregular intervals are usually lower coverage jobs used for marking up text by hand.
Bigger print jobs with large shaded areas, potentially making heavy use of colour, might mean that you’ll get significantly fewer pages out of your cartridges before having to replace them. As more ink is being used to get the sort of coverage you’re after.
Printer ink cartridges can age and dry out
The relative age of your printer and cartridges will also play a factor. Ink cartridges tend to last around two years before their internal sponges begin to dry up and become ineffective at dispensing ink.
