You’re not alone if you have a horror story about your printer ink cartridge running dry right when you needed it most. We’ve all got a story or two. But you can avoid getting caught out like that again by doing some fairly basic checks at semi-regular intervals.
We’re talking about checking the ink levels in your HP printer cartridges. More than that, we’re talking about how you can save yourself the trouble of having to get in there and check your ink levels manually. Read on here to find out more.
Checking on your computer
Checking your printer ink levels isn’t all that hard once you know where to look. It just takes getting the right pointers in the right direction.
If you’re using a wireless HP printer, you need to first make sure that they are connected. This will mean checking that both your computer and your printer are connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
For Windows
- Head to the start menu and find your control panel. There, you’ll find a printers and faxes menu.
- This printers and faxes menu will have all your connected printers displayed. You can right click on the printer you want to check and click printing preferences.
- Clicking printing preferences will open a new window. That window will have a tab labelled services and clicking on that tab will show you the HP Toolbox.
- In that HP toolbox, you’ll find an estimated ink level.
For Mac
- Open Finder. On the left of your finder window, you’ll find Applications.
- In applications there will be a ‘System Preferences’. Clicking ‘System Preferences’ will open a window where you’ll find ‘Printers & Scanners’.
- ‘Printers & Scanners’ will show you your connected printers, and you’ll be able to select the HP printer you’re hoping to check.
- Click on ‘Options & Supplies’ within that window, and you’ll be able to see an estimate as to how much ink you have left in your HP printer.
Getting the most out of your cartridges
If you’re looking to get more out of your HP printer ink cartridges, then there are some things you can do to make them stretch a little further. HP printers will commonly have economy settings that will help you get better mileage out of your cartridges. Regular use (at least once a week) is also a solid way of keeping everything in smooth working order.
