How Long Does A Toner Cartridge Last?

Ink and toner cartridges don’t tend to come cheap – or at least they don’t when you aren’t shopping with us at TonerCity. But as with any consumable, you’ll want to know how long you can keep that stock of toner on the shelf before having to use it or lose it to expiry.

But there definitely is a lot to unpack here, so let’s dive into the different aspects of the process that you should be familiar with if you’re going to get the answer you need. We’re going to look at storage and use and give you some pointers on making your toner cartridges last the way they should.

Do Toner Cartridges Expire?

The first question to look at is whether or not cartridges expire. It’s a good question, and the short answer is that toner cartridges last pretty much forever when stored right. You’re much more likely to have used your stock of toner cartridges before expiry becomes an issue. But the key here is ‘stored right’.

It’s not so much about worrying about everything going to plan, as it is understanding how a toner cartridge might be compromised in the interim while it’s being stored. Fortunately, it’s all fairly easy, keep the cartridge dry, don’t break the seal before you have to, and try to avoid subjecting the cartridge to sunlight or high temperatures.

How Do Toner Cartridges Compare to Ink Cartridges?

One of the key strengths that toner cartridges bring to the table is that they last much better than their ink counterparts. Both in storage, and when placed in your printer.

The reason for this relates mostly to the material itself. Toner is really just a highly refined dust that is brushed precisely over the page. (You can learn more about that process here). Whereas ink is a liquid medium that is liable to dry out.

You still have to be careful to avoid having your toner exposed to moisture. But ink cartridges have to contend with the time spent open and drawn on in a printer.

How Many Pages Can You Get Out of a Toner Cartridge

Both toner and ink cartridges come in a variety of sizes, and they’ll almost invariably give you an estimate of how many pages you might expect out of them. But when it comes to figuring out how many pages you’ll actually be able to print, the key detail is always in the use.

If you’re mostly just printing off documents exclusively in black and white, then your colour cartridges will last much longer. If you’re printing in colour, then of course your mileage on the black cartridge might get a boost, but you’ll be spreading that use across your colour cartridges.
