How to Test Your Printer Ink & Diagnose with Test Page

A reliable printer that works at a moderate to high capacity is still an indispensable piece of equipment in most office environments. And even if you’re printing at home for reasons unrelated to work, you certainly don’t want your printer becoming unreliable.

Not everyone knows though that you can quickly and simply diagnose problems using a test page. They’re a quick and reliable way of getting to the heart of what’s going on – if anything at all. And it’ll help you figure out what shades or hues your printer is struggling with.

Let’s take a look at how you can run one of these tests yourself.

Check Your Printer Ink Levels

If you’re running a test because you’ve noticed issues with a particular hue or shade, then the first port of call will be to check your ink levels. You might spot the problem here and save yourself some time, as it could simply be that one or more cartridges have run dry.

We’ve written on checking your ink levels before, including articles particular to popular printing brands such as Brother and HP. Have a look at these blogs for guidance on checking the ink levels in your cartridges. For tips on reducing usage overall, head here.

Run a Manufacturer Specific Test Page

The majority of printers, and definitely every printer designed for big corporate office use, will have a test page option built into their software. If you have a look through the menu on your printer, you should find a test page option somewhere buried in your settings or diagnostics options. Once you’ve found this option (you can look at the manufacturer’s instructions if it’s proving difficult to find) you can go ahead and print that page as per normal.

Find a Test Page Equivalent Online

If you’ve had some trouble locating your default test page on your printer, or suspect that there might not be one there, don’t worry! You can always look online for a test page template to use. The first place to look would be on your printer’s brand website, but there are a variety of places elsewhere to look online as well. A quick Google search will do the trick.

The only thing to be wary of with third party test pages is that they might not be so closely optimised to the particular way your printer is designed. If you are spotting new and unexpected problems with this test, perhaps look further for other third-party sources.
