Refilling an HP Ink Cartridge: Getting the Right Supplies
In order to be as precise, accurate, and spill-free as possible you’ll want to get yourself the appropriate ink refill kit. Widely available, these include a syringe, a set of injection needles, some protective gloves and, most importantly, a set of ink bottles.
Refilling the cartridge; a step-by-step
- Ensure your workspace is adequately protected; placing a suitable cloth or towel facilitates an easy clean-up should you be subject to any spills or accidents.
- With gloves, remove the front label sticker from your cartridge. If you’re refilling a tricolour cartridge, you’ll want to identify which chamber belongs to each colour. The best way to do so is to gently poke through the internal sponge with your syringe. The remaining ink will be visible on the end of your syringe. Identify the colour, and wipe the syringe clean. Using some tape, make sure to cover the holes you are not refilling, to avoid any spills or potential transfer from one colour chamber to another. If you are refilling a black cartridge, simply use the top hole and cover the remaining ones.
- Fill your syringe with the desired ink from your ink refill kit
- Gently place the syringe into the whole; you may encounter some resistance due to the sponge – maintain a soft hand while inserting your needle into the sponge
- For high-yield cartridges, you’ll be injecting approximately 10mL of ink into the sponge. For standard HP cartridges, 4mL should suffice.
- Once the ink has been injected, remove the syringe and tape, letting the cartridge sit for half an hour. This allows the sponge to fully absorb the ink prior to re-installing it into the printer.
- Re-insert your refilled cartridge into your printer. At this stage, most HP printers will still display a refill message, this can be ignored as the printer is now ready to use.
