Inkjet printers run on ink \u2013 and that ink will eventually run dry. We all know it, but sometimes we get caught out. If you\u2019ve ever found yourself in this pinch, you\u2019ll know what it might mean to be able to squeeze that last page or two out of your depleted cartridges.<\/span><\/p>\n

In this article, we wanted to help you find your way around that dreaded low ink message \u2013 and give you a way to get that last little bit out of your printer when you find yourself in a pinch. Read on here to get our tips on forcing that last bit out of your printer.<\/span><\/p>\n

Understanding printer cartridges<\/b><\/h2>\n

Colour printers tend to have four cartridges in them. Those cartridges in almost all cases will contain the colours cyan, magenta, yellow, and black. You\u2019ll see these colours referred to as CMYK, the K standing for \u2018Key\u2019 (Black). This is important because getting the most out of your cartridges (and squeezing past the \u2018Cannot Print\u2019 message) means getting into your printer and removing one of these.<\/span><\/p>\n

The process<\/b><\/h2>\n

Your printer should tell you which cartridge has run dry. If you\u2019ve been printing bulk word documents, it will likely be your Key cartridge \u2013 and if it\u2019s been photos or images, likely one of your colour cartridges has run dry.<\/span><\/p>\n

But the process is the same. What you have to do is:<\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Identify which cartridge is close to running out.<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Remove that cartridge and close your printer up.<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Power your printer down, and switch off the power.<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. Wait for two minutes.<\/span><\/li>\n
  5. Re-install the cartridge and attempt to print as normal.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    This process isn\u2019t guaranteed, your cartridge may simply be too dry and really truly might be done. But powering down your printer and introducing the cartridge \u2018like new\u2019 gives your printer a chance to \u2018forget\u2019 that it was empty. This might be just enough to squeeze that last couple pages out of a near depleted cartridge.<\/span><\/p>\n

    If that doesn\u2019t work<\/b><\/h2>\n

    If this process doesn\u2019t work, then it might be time to let it go. It\u2019s important to note that if you\u2019ve run your inkjet printer cartridges to almost bone-dry, then you\u2019re running the risk of damaging the printheads and causing much longer-term problems for your printer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
